THE MIRROR
The Site
The site is a gravel circus with an open view to a federal highway, to housing blocks on Lobeda’s southern edge and far into the Saale valley. On the site, there are benches installed in different viewing directions.
The Mission
Make Pollution Great Again.
The Result
The highway is present. Directly below the site cars zoom by at incredible speed. The project started with the question: Who is watching whom? The newly built park reversed the direction of the gaze from the people in cars passing by and making assumptions on life in the housing blocks, to the residents of the neighbourhood overlooking the endlessly flow of traffic. The topic of pollution was thought of in terms of the sound that the wind carries to the park, and its transformation into a gentle rustle of plastic leaves while also providing shade, color and shelter.
Team Statement
As a response to the former noise pollution from the highway and the constant wind on site, we developed the concept of an acoustic wind chime. Above the seating area we stretched a delicate grid structure that creates a shelter without obstructing the view. Light and colourful elements move in the wind triggering users both visually and acoustically.
