BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN
The Site
The project is located on Lobeda’s main pedestrian axis next to a popular Kebab stand on an open market that never took off.
The Mission
Create a Landmark for Change.
The Result
The Iron Curtain is known in historical and political terms, but it also describes the gray perforated metal wall at the back of this site, a ventilation for an underground parking lot. The team decided to leverage the already vivid social life that the street-food trailer attracts: people sitting to eat on the back benches, children playing on the pavement. The project consists of three frames, they offer play, seating and exchange possibilities. Two of them are movable to change according to shade and use.
Team Statement
This project, while recognising major historical events, aims at showing how people are able to shape the meanings commonly given to the places they live in.
Our aim is to create a window to the future, and to invite people to think in the endless possibilities of changing the status quo.
To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.
