The Site
The site is a patch of grass next to a sealed-off building that housed a legendary student club. A pedestrian tunnel in front of the site offers the only obstruction-free passage for pedestrian and bicycle traffic between the eastern and the western parts of Lobeda.
The Mission
Create a Passage Between Past and Future.
The Result
The low-rise building at the boundary of the site housed locally famous ice-cream parlor and later an influential student club. For more than 12 years, the building is empty. A new student initiative aims to revive the building’s function as a student club. In an attempt to respond to both the east-west connecting aspect of the site, as well as to its historical role, the team projected the sealed windows onto the grass floor in a series of multi-functional platforms. Another platform on the eastern side overlooks the site and offers a new connection between the two sides.
Team Statement
Our intention was to emphasize the physical and symbolic continuity between the two parts of the neighborhood on either side of the pedestrian tunnel. Therefore we placed elements on both sides. One of the main issues raised when speaking about the tunnel with passersby was the occasional fear of using it during the night. For that reason, we focused on creating activities than can generate an ‘Eyes on the Street’ effect.
